Life after Idol: Season 5
More great feedback and useful contributions to the entire scientific body of knowledge about past Idols; I appreciate it. Check out Derek's comment
on the class of Season 4 in particular for helpful updates. Before jumping to this season's finalists, I wanted to take a quick virtual look around to see if anything was popping for the 12 semifinalists. Of course,
it is early yet, so there's not much in the way of official sites, or even fan sites, so it's likely this will not be a marathon post. And anything you know about these folks (if you remember them at all) will be
helpful. So hit the button for more: Taking them in alphabetical order, since I can't remember all the details of their order of elimination: Bobby Bennett:
Aside from his cameo on the Manilow episode, the Copacabana Kid has pretty much disappeared off our radar, but not for lack of ambition. Would I be overly cruel to suggest that the likelihood
of Bobby's winning a Grammy, a Tony or an Oscar is somewhat less than that of a direct Earth/Moon collision?Ayla Brown:
If she had made it to the finals, as she richly deserved over Melissa, I wonder what impact that would have had on Katharine's finish. Ayla had a lot of similarities to Katharine (looks, good voice -- though not as well-trained -- slightly robotic aura) and seemed a bit more down-to-earth and giggle-free. Anyway,
this fan site
will fill you in on her many post-Idol Boston-area appearances and fairly vague recording plans.Heather Cox:
Struck me, much more than anyone else, as sort of a Stepford Idol. After a few interviews immediately after her elimination, there's not much to report. But she does have a degree in accounting to fall back on.
Brenna Gethers:
As wholly unlikable a contestant as Idol has ever spawned (obnoxiousness seemed to be her basic strategy), she doesn't seem to have made any major advances in her plan for massive international stardom. There are some vaporous plans to record. (Wonder if she has a sister? I wouldn't mind seeing a duo called, of course, 2Gethers.)
Patrick Hall: Not remembering a lot about him, except a general impression that he was booted too early. But he is, as you can read if you wish, soldiering on.Will Makar: Now Will's an enterprising young fellow, with an official website that features a countdown
until he's "no longer under AI contract." He's also singing with the Houston Symphony and (a staple of post-Idol careers) singing the National Anthem (at a Green Bay Packers game later this year).
Gedeon McKinney: Along with Ayla, the semifinalist who really got robbed of a merited placing in the finals. (A fan site proclaims exactly that.) He did unnerve a few people with his eerie smile, true, but he could sing rings
around not only Kevin Covais, but probably Ace and Bucky among the male finalists. He's only 17; we may hear from him again, but haven't recently.Becky O'Donohue:
Famous, if you can call it that, for the twin peeks she provided Maxim readers, Becky is intent on, at least in this less-than-revealing interview, "pursuing her dream," whatever that might be.
Jose Penala:
Apart from some dubious-looking, antique fan sites that I won't bother to link to, things seem all quiet on the post-Idol front for "Sway." As a singer of Filipino descent, he might consider following in Camile and Jasmine's footsteps in that market.
David Radford: The season's John Stevens crooner-type, the young Chicagoan is not much in the news, but does hold
this distinction.Stevie Scott:
Her operatic style may not have been an advantage, but she had pretty good pipes. Her official fan site
has no post-Idol updates beyond a plea for fans to tell her what they'd like to hear her sing.Kinnick Sky:
Overshadowed by the more distinctive talents of, well, all the female finalists except maybe Melissa, the Duluth, Ga., resident has stayed in the shadows since her elimination. |
